ABBEY CHURCH SAINT TROPHIME
Romanesque abbey church in Eschau with tombstones and stained glass windows from the period, with information sheets on its history
Eschau was home to a community of Benedictine nuns for 750 years (770-1525). A pilgrims' hospital was founded on this "Roman Road" in 1143. This Romanesque abbey church is one of the finest examples in Europe of a basilica with a low transept from the Carolingian-Ottonian period. A sandstone sarcophagus contains the relics of Saint Sophia. Admire the statues of saints, some dating from 1500. Funerary slabs and stained glass windows dating from the 19th century are also visible. Information sheets on the history of this building will be available.
