ABBAYE NOTRE DAME D'IGNY
Notre-Dame du Val d'Igny Abbey offers a wide range of facilities for visitors, relaxation and meditation in Arcis-le-Ponsart
The founding charter of Igny Abbey dates back to 1126: to thank St. Bernard for his intercession in Reims to settle a dispute between the people of Champagne and Archbishop Renaud de Martigny, the latter offered him land on which to found a monastery. The monks of Clairvaux Abbey arrived in 1128. Under the abbatiate of Guerric, from 1138 onwards, the monastery flourished and the community grew rapidly. But the following centuries saw the decline of the abbey, with the Commende regime, wars and then the Revolution. A timid revival began in the second half of the 19th century, but was brought to a halt by the Great War. Major renovations were carried out between the wars, on the model of Loc-Dieu in Aveyron. Since 2009, several former small communities of other abbeys that had closed due to lack of personnel have been brought together to form a new, larger community in favor of their union: Belval (Pas-de-Calais), La Grâce-Dieu (Doubs), Igny, then Ubexy (Vosges). For their work, the nuns set up a chocolate factory.
Those who come to the monastery are received with respect and humanity, in peace, prayer and the Word of God. They are welcomed individually or in groups, for a maximum of 8 days. They are invited to join in prayer and may ask a nun for spiritual assistance. Meals can be taken in silence in a separate room.
