THE HOLY CROSS GATE
Door raised in 1769, enthroned in the middle of a large crossroads and signals the entry in the historical heart of Châlons.
In the past, the Sainte-Croix gate was part of the city's ramparts, which have now disappeared. Monumental, it was built in 1769 on the plans of an old gate. On April 5, 1770, the General Council of the Marne dedicated it to the dauphine Marie-Antoinette of Habsburg-Lorraine, whose arrival from Austria was scheduled for May 11. In June 1791, the queen passed through it a second time, accompanied by Louis XVI and their relatives, on her way back from Varennes where their flight had been stopped. Today, the gate stands in the middle of a large crossroads and still marks the entrance to the historic heart of Châlons.
