MOTHER-OF-PEARL CHURCH
Church dedicated to a young Christian woman from Reims tortured by a Roman prefect
Imposing and massive, the church of Sainte-Macre was built in the 11th century before being destroyed five times! It is dedicated to a young Christian woman from Remy who was tortured by a Roman prefect at the time of the great persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian, around the year 300. Seriously mutilated, she died in prison but her relics were later transferred to Fismes. The church was for a long time the real centre of the town. It can be reached via the church square or via the allée des Promenades, which runs along the old ramparts and gives a view of the church.
