ABBEY'S CHURCH
This building is the third church since the abbey was founded by Saint Nivard in 650
Hautvillers boasts a rich heritage. Founded by Saint Nivard in 650, the abbey houses its 3ᵉ church, erected in 1518 under the direction of Dom Roger. Of the original Romanesque church, only the lower part of the west façade with its portal remains. The high altar, erected in 1691 under the supervision of Dom Pérignon, sits majestically. In front of the choir lie two tombstones, those of Dom Pérignon and Dom Ruinart. Hautvillers, the legendary birthplace of champagne, is said to be where Dom Pérignon perfected his winemaking techniques.
