ABBEY CHURCH OF SAINTE MADELEINE DE MOIREMONT
Located in the heart of the village of Moiremont, the abbey was built at the beginning of the 13th century above a Romanesque crypt, rediscovered in 1898, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary: Notre-Dame-aux-Grottes. The present façade dates from the end of the 18th century. Around 1655, the abbey-church welcomed a young novice then aged 16: Pierre Pérignon who then joined the abbey of Saint-Vanne in Verdun, then Hautvillers where he became the famous monk Dom Pérignon by participating in the elaboration of champagne. Today, only the abbey church remains of the original building, which became the parish church during the Revolution. Inside, you can see some remarkable vestiges dating back to the splendour of the abbey: two statues of Saint Eloi and Saint Jean-Baptiste, dating from 1643, the stalls and two sculpted doors opening onto the 17th century choir. Older pieces of tiling date back to medieval times.
