NATIONAL MONUMENT OF THE VICTORY OF THE MARL
35-metre-high monument to the victorious battle of September 5-12, 1914
As its name suggests, the Monument national de la Victoire de la Marne was erected to perpetuate the memory of the victorious battle that took place from September 5 to 12, 1914. Built at Mondement, the strategic battle site, it is managed by the "Mondement 1914" association, which grew out of the "Les Soldats de la Marne" association, created in 1937 and authorized to award the Marne medal to combatants in the first battle of the Marne under Joffre and the second under Foch. In 1999, the association's articles of association were updated to add to the duty of remembrance the mission of peace education for the younger generations within a European framework, with the opening of a history museum in the former Mondement school. On the first Sunday in September, a ceremony commemorating the battle recalls its European and American dimension, with events bringing together several countries on the Allied side. The association welcomes visitors to the museum every Sunday from June to September. Guided tours for groups are available all year round.
