HOLY CLOTILDE BASILICA
Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Reims, neo-Byzantine style, preserving 2,000 relics of saints, contained in 200 reliquaries
On the left bank of the Aisne and Vesle rivers, a neobyzantine dome stands out from the Remois landscape, dominating the Sainte-Anne district: the dome of the Sainte-Clotilde basilica. Influenced by orientalist fashion, the architect Alphonse Gosset adopted a Greek cross-shaped plan to build the building in 1898. The basilica commemorates the fourteenth centenary of King Clovis' baptism and pays tribute to his wife, Clotilde, who was responsible for the conversion of the King of the Franks to Christianity. Cardinal Langénieux made Sainte-Clotilde the reliquary of the saints of France. In its crypt, it now houses 402 reliquaries containing nearly 3,000 relics of saints.
