THE MARCH GATE
One of the last vestiges of antiquity, one of the four monumental arches that delimited the city's two main thoroughfares
This magnificent building is one of the last ancient remains of the city. It recalls the Gallo-Roman city of the Rems which reached its apogee at the end of the iie century after Jesus Christ. By the year 200, four monumental arches delineated the two main axes of the city, cardo and deccumanus. The Mars gate is one of these arches, and from here the Roman paths go to Laon, Boulogne and beyond the Battles. A door to three arcades allowed tanks to pass through the center, while on both sides pedestrians. Scenes adorn the vaults of the decorated building, Romulus and Remus breastfed by the wolf… Afterwards this door was integrated into the walls of the city, and then in the strong castle built by the bishops.
Please note: Thanks to the strong mobilization of the patrons and the commitment of the Remonths to preserve their heritage, the City of Reims decided to start a second phase of work relating to the restoration of the costumes and decorations the Porte de Mars. This work is expected to last until 2020 in connection with the construction of the Reims Grand Center project.
