FRANCO-AMERICAN MEMORIAL ROOM
Located on the first floor of Sommepy-Tahure City Hall, this memorial room was inaugurated on 19 November 1925 by the United States Ambassador, Myron T. Herrick and General Gouraud. It is a tribute of gratitude from the village to the American allies who bravely fought during the Battle of Sommepy from 26 September to 4 October 1918. After the war, donations from the American Red Cross received through the Sommepy Fund Committee helped rebuild the city and build this museum dedicated to the Great War. During the visit, you can admire its trompe-l'oeil painted walls that pay tribute to the soldiers and retrace the journey of the soldiers of the 22nd US Marines who delivered the village. A vast collection of period objects, models in uniform and weapons bear witness to life on the battlefields during the Great War and to this tragic episode in the history of the town.
