Semi-buried historic center on the hillside, offering a tour of the history of the 1792 battle of Valmy

Semi-buried, built into the hillside, the building of the Historical Centre designed by the architect Pierre-Louis Faloci follows the shapes of the landscape in which it is set. The visit immerses anyone in the fascinating history of the Battle of Valmy, where, on 20 September 1792, the absolute monarchy embodied by Austria and Prussia clashed with the freedom and equality affirmed by the French Revolution in a power struggle in which the French troops, commanded by Generals Kellermann and Dumouriez, overcame the combined forces of the European monarchies. On the day of the battle, the first meeting of the Convention was held, where the abolition of royalty in France was decided: in this sense, Valmy became the symbol of the Republic. On the evening of the battle, the famous mill was burned on the orders of General Kellermann because the enemy was using it as a target. During your visit, thanks to the new technologies of image and sound and to the scents diffused, you can relive the battle that saved the French Revolution. The paintings come to life, as does a model that traces the movement of the troops. The Centre displays a Gribeauval cannon, the artillery piece that led the French troops to victory.

Several times during the year, when the weather permits, the mill is returned to its original purpose, the wings are covered with their canvas and the millstone is reactivated, once again crushing the cereals of the nearby countryside.
