Water transport played a fundamental role in the history of Vitry-le-François. By choosing the site of Maucourt, François I and his architect Marini, already thought to use the river to increase the city's development. Previously at the foundation of Vitry, there was the small port of Bas-Village. It was the fief of the boatmen of the old Maucourt. The creation and development of Vitry-le-François intensifièrent the traffic in Bas-Village, inhabited exclusively by submarine. The three canals (side to la Marne, from Marne to the Rhine, from Marne to Saône) provided the Seine-Rhine and Seine-Mediterranean links via Vitry. Water transport was in Vitry-le-François the generator of many trades and jobs. With the development of road and rail, of this centre boatmasters for centuries, it remains to the Vitryats the nostalgia of canals crossing the city and barges moored along the shopping streets. But river tourism now brings its stone to local animation and economy.
