THE CITADEL MIOLLIS
Citadel built on a rocky promontory in 1492 and detention site during WW2. Open to the public
Built on a rocky promontory in 1492 (date of the foundation of Ajaccio), the citadel only had a simple "castello", a keep and a low enclosure. The city's defense proved insufficient, and work was undertaken from 1553 onwards. The ditches were widened, deepened and connected to the sea. After the treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, the Genoese gave the citadel its current appearance. Open to the public since 2021, there are beautiful craft and art exhibitions as well as a guinguette to refresh yourself.
