SACRED GROUND
Stele on the Route des Sanguinaires, honoring the memory of the thousands of Corsicans who died for France in the 1914-18 war
On the Route des Sanguinaires, a stele erected in September 1933 honors the memory of the thousands of Corsicans who died for France in the 1914-18 war. The work of sculptor Deblaize, it contains one of only six urns in the world containing soil samples officially taken from the battlefields of the First World War. The other six are in the Saint-Louis des Invalides church, Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, on the island of Théviec, in the village of Saint-Marc la Pile and in the village of Meures in Haute-Loire. A beautiful place of Remembrance.
