THE CHURCH OF SAINTE-MARIE-MAJEURE
Romanesque church in the heart of the upper town, built in the century in Bonifacio
Built in the 13th century, Sainte-Marie-Majeure is a Romanesque church in the heart of the upper town. It is the largest, the most richly ornamented and the oldest, as well as the main one in Bonifacio. Some beautiful pieces of furniture are to be discovered and a large loggia precedes it which has long fulfilled an administrative function, since the elected officials deliberated there and the podestate, chief magistrate, rendered justice there. The coat of arms of Genoa adorns one of its portals.
