THE STAIRCASE OF THE KING OF ARAGON
A 189-step staircase in the 45° cliff face, built by monks and giving access to a drinking water spring.
At the end of Simon-Varsi street, 189 steps cut into the cliff at a 45° angle! They would have been dug in one night by the soldiers of the king of Aragon, Alphonse V, during the siege of 1420. However, the real builders would be the Franciscan monks who would have cut these steps to reach a drinking water source at the bottom of the cliffs. What is certain is that it is advisable to be well-shod to undertake this unforgettable walk of beauty.
