THE NATURAL RESERVE OF THE BOUCHES DE BONIFACIO
Natural reserve of the Bouches de Bonifacio, a place to observe many natural species, fish and dolphins
Unmissable, these magnificent blocks of granite polished by the sea are among the most beautiful jewels of Corsica. The landscape, almost lunar, is preserved: true reservoirs of biodiversity, the Lavezzi islands are considered by scientists as a place to observe many natural species. Ballet of fish and dolphins in turquoise water. A true paradise for divers (scuba diving is however forbidden), the archipelago belongs to the International Marine Park. Fishing is strictly forbidden. From a historical point of view, the Lavezzi were the scene of a shipwreck that cost the lives of 773 men on February 15, 1855 when the French frigate La Sémillante was wrecked while sailing from Toulon towards the Black Sea to provide reinforcements during the Crimean War. Wiping out a violent storm, the ship broke up on the shallows and no man escaped. A granite pyramid pays tribute to the victims. There are several companies from Bonifacio or Porto Vecchio to take you to the islands or to rent a boat. If possible, avoid the visit during the months of July and August, the number of tourists coming to discover the places will prevent you from enjoying the landscape. The coastal path criss-crosses the island from one end to the other. Don't forget hats, the indispensable sun cream because the sun reflected by the granite and the water is overpowering, bottle of water because there is no drinking water on the island and almost no shade!
