THE GRAIN OF SAND

This grain of sand, sculpted by erosion, is one of the most striking features of Bonifacio's natural panorama.
It's Bonifacio's most famous rock. This grain of sand, which owes its name to its shape rather than its size, is one of the most striking features of Bonifacio's natural panorama, a mass of limestone detached from the cliff. This rock, located close to the coast and visible from the heights of the town, symbolizes the inescapable destiny that nature seems to have in store for the town of Bonifacio, in the very long term of course, a destiny similar to that of Venice: to be buried beneath the waves. The erosion that has sculpted the coastline of the southernmost tip of the Isle of Beauty is threatening the buildings closest to the sea. The mouths of Bonifacio are among the most exposed coasts in the Mediterranean, and are the scene of titanic storms during which the sea competes with the wind to overturn boats and hurl large ships onto the shore, as was the case for La Sémillante in 1855.
