A fantastic mineral landscape, as if carved out of the mass of surrealistically cut red granite rocks.
Between Porto and Cargèse, the D 81 runs through the Calanques de Piana - Calanche di Piana. Listed as a World Heritage site, they reveal geological formations of fantastic color and sculpture. Divided between the communes of Ota and Piana, this small mountain range, the result of ancient local volcanic activity, is classified as a 730-hectare Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF). You're sure to fall under the spell of its rock formations, which form a remarkable landscape as you drive along, depicting a heart, a bishop, a fortified castle and lovers. The site is very popular with tourists, and the road is very busy in summer. Parking is difficult, but several footpaths cross the site. You can also take a boat tour of the Calanques de Piana. A magical way to discover them, and one of the most beautiful marine excursions in Corsica. To see the red of the rock plunging into the turquoise blue of the sea, to sail under a rocky porch, to admire the rock sculptures from the sea is a unique experience.
