THE MENHIRS OF PADDAGHJU (PALAGHJU OR PALAGGIU)
The general orientation of these remarkable carved megaliths is common to all menhirs and statue-menhirs.
With its 258 menhirs, this is the largest alignment in the Mediterranean, known in ancient times as Campu di i Turchi, the cemetery of the Turks. Seven groups of menhirs make up the alignment. Their axes run north-south, but only one runs east-west. This general orientation is characteristic of all unreworked menhir and statue-menhir alignments. All menhirs have been sculpted. Most of them are only roughly sketched, and although they cannot be considered statues, as none of them has an exposed head, they all have a human silhouette. The land is not maintained, so the menhirs are difficult to find, either lying down or hidden by vegetation, unfortunately! Access is now forbidden to the public by the owner!
