L'ARCA U CAMPU SANTU
A collective tomb, a sort of vaulted underground chamber with a narrow opening closed by a stone slab at Zévaco.
In the cemetery adjoining the church stand the walls of L'Arca, "U Campu Santu". Erected as a collective tomb, the Arca is a sort of vaulted underground chamber with a narrow opening closed by a stone slab. This "burial for all" bears witness to a tradition of collective burial that has been deeply rooted over the centuries in the island's rural environment. The Arca de Zevaco contains the remains of Jean-Côme Poggi, examining magistrate from Porto-Ferraio on the island of Elba, and chamberlain to Napoleon I. A monument well worth contemplating.
