LAKE DE NINO
The lake occupies a very open site at Albetacce, where you can discover the pozzines
Lake Nino is a jewel perched at an altitude of 1,743 metres in the Rotondo massif. It's not an easy hike, and you'd better be well-shod. Once you reach the top, it's truly sublime. Unlike the other high-altitude lakes, Melo and Capitello, Nino has the particularity of occupying a very open site. It's a glacial lake with the reputation of being the most beautiful in Corsica. Here you can discover the pozzines, from "pozzi", which means "well" in Corsican. These are water-filled holes in thick, mossy grassland. Pozzines are typical of the Corsican mountains, but those at Lac de Nino are the best known. You'll share the site with the horses, cows and wild pigs that graze freely here in summer. The starting point for the walk to Lac de Nino is next to the Poppaghia forest house on the D84, north-east of Evisa and the Col de Vergio, at an altitude of 1,076 metres. It's a fairly strenuous hike (700 m ascent), with 4h30 of sustained walking (outward and return). Lake Nino can also be reached from another starting point, directly from the Col du Vergio ski resort, 10 km from Evisa, with no difficulty other than taking into account the total distance and walking time over 15 km, for a total walking time of 8 hours round trip. But whichever itinerary you choose, you'll certainly not regret this hike to discover the lake and the pozzines.
