Museum presenting the remains discovered on the site of Aléria, also housing ceramics, retracing the life and activities of the town
The museum exhibits all the remains discovered on the site, with a particular focus on objects from the Greek, Etruscan, Carthaginian and Roman periods. Ceramics, weapons, jewelry and utilitarian objects retrace the daily life, economic activities and funerary concerns of the inhabitants of Aléria during Antiquity.
The history of Fort Matra. The museum is housed in Fort Matra, built by the Genoese between the 14th and 16th centuries to accommodate a small cavalry detachment tasked with guarding the plain and the passage to Corte, 40 km away. In 1730, Corsican rebels attacked and pillaged the fort. Then, six years later, the site was used to welcome the first (and only!) king of Corsica, Théodore de Neuhoff, who had landed on the beach at Aléria.
In the 18th century, it was leased by the town to the powerful Matra family, before being taken over by the army and customs. Prosper Mérimée visited in 1839, as did numerous travellers throughout the 19th century.
Classified as a historic monument in 1962, it became an archaeological repository in 1963. Since 1969, it has been named after the Corsican historian Jérôme Carcopino, who oversaw the resumption of excavations on the Aléria site.
The museum. On the second floor, several exhibition rooms recount fifteen centuries of the history of Aléria and Corsica, from protohistory to the end of the Roman Empire. This chronological sequence evolves according to archaeological excavations.
