ORATOIRE SAINTE-CROIX
This oratory, with its painted, sculpted and gilded decor, is a jewel of late Baroque art set in the citadel.
The good news is that this magnificent oratory, which has been closed in recent years, is due to reopen to the public in 2024. It was built by Bastia's oldest brotherhood, the white flagellant penitents, dedicated to the Holy Cross. The interior décor is splendid! The vaults and walls are covered in gilded stucco, in the barochetto style, which in Italy corresponds to the Louis XV style. The large black Christ in the niche above the altar was found off the coast of Bastia by two anchovy fishermen in 1428.
