GALEAZZINI AND KER MARIA PALACES
The Palais Antoni Antoniotti is located between the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and the Quai des Martyrs.
Between Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and Quai des Martyrs, in a place formerly known as A Punta, stands the Palais Antoni Antoniotti, a 17th-century bourgeois residence commissioned by Piero Galeazzini, a wealthy merchant whose descendant, Gio-Battista Galeazzini, was mayor of the town in the 18th century and played a key role in opposing the Anglo-Corsican regime of George III (1794-1796). Other so-called American palaces can be found in Bastia and Cap Corse, particularly on the eastern side. On the other side of town, however, our favorite is the Villa Ker Maria, the former Clinique Dufour, which later housed the Bastia branch of the CTC (now Collectivité de Corse). With its salmon-colored facade, surrounding palm trees and location above the small Minelli cove in Ville-di-Pietrabugnu, it exudes an irresistible charm. Well-known to the people of Bastia and all residents of the northern part of the city, this villa looks out to sea and rises into the sky, along a busy road that climbs to the heights of Bastia (route du cap Corse). The building is a delight to behold at every turn. It's well-maintained and, in all its relative modesty, it's very appealing. Its facade catches the sun and the colors, which vary from hour to hour. As for the name Ker Maria, Maison Maria in Breton, it could evoke the Breton origins of the beautiful woman for whom it was built, but that's just a hypothesis!
