SERRA DI PIGNU - PIGNO COLLAR
A place within easy driving distance, with breathtaking views over the islands of the Tuscan archipelago and the mountains of Balagne.
Don't miss this incredible view under any circumstances, weather permitting! It's one of the region's must-see panoramas. On the other hand, if the weather is bad, you'll certainly have your head in the clouds. Accessible by car, the Col du Pignu is the starting point for numerous hikes, each more magnificent than the last. Heading up from Bastia towards the Saint-Florent road, 800 metres before the Col de Teghime, look out for the small "Serra di Pignu" sign on the right and take the D338 uphill. Follow this road for just over 4 kilometers. The road is very narrow and steep, so drive carefully. At the end, you'll come to the telephone relay mast. Stop here and walk up for a few minutes to discover the sublime view. On one side stretches the east coast, with Bastia and the Tyrrhenian Sea at your feet, the Biguglia lagoon, the Marana lido and the various islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Capraia, Elba and Montecristo. On the other lies the west coast, the Gulf of Saint-Florent, the Nebbiu and the Balagne mountains. In between, the high peaks of Cap Corse will undoubtedly tempt you to take a stroll. If you had to choose a time of day, we'd warmly recommend venturing out in the early evening with a hearty picnic, to take in the exceptional views before the sun sets. The height of romance!
