The most spectacular feature of the old town is the citadel, built inland in the century.
It is the most spectacular feature of the old town. Built in the 15th century, the citadel is perched atop a promontory some one hundred meters high. Unlike Genoese fortresses, it was built inland. Once a prison for political prisoners, then the headquarters of a Foreign Legion regiment until 1984, it now houses the Corsican Museum. Just before the entrance to the citadel, the belvedere on its rocky promontory offers an exceptional panorama of the mountain, the valley and the old town.
