THE TOWER OF THE MORTALLA
The Mortella tower, a lovely hike starting from the Roya beach in Saint-Florent.
Punta Mortella marks the western tip of the Gulf of Saint-Florent and precedes the Genoese tower of the same name to the south of the Agriates desert. Built between 1553 and 1555 by Andrea Doria, an Italian general in his eighties, this tower commanded access to the Gulf of Saint-Florent, along with the Vecchiaia tower just opposite. Admiral Nelson, attracted by the architecture of the Mortella tower, copied the plans at the end of the 18th century. Identical towers, mistakenly named Martello Towers, can be found on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland!
