CHEMIN DES GABELOUS
Go there and contact
Gabelous is the name given to customs officers collecting the salt tax, called gabelle, under the Old Regime. In Franche-Comté, salt fortified squares were Salins-les-Bains, a fortified town with salt springs, and Arc-et-Senans, where brine extracted from Saline was transformed into salt. To transport this brine, a saumoduc was built. So the Gabelous would take care of this precious cargo at various checkpoints and were fighting against smugglers who were not hesitating to drill the pipes to harvest this old treasure. Today, a marked 29,5 km trail, cut in 15 steps, is approximately the historical route of the saumoduc. You will longerez La Loue and the Furious by the building of Scales, Champagne-sur-Loue, Port-Lesney, Rennes-sur-la-Loue and Chapelle-sur-Furious, following explanatory signs tracing the epic of white gold. We recommend good shoes for the brave who would like to follow the trail on foot. The itinerary is also accessible by bicycle.
