MONT BART FORT
A symbol of pride and prevention, it is one of the fortified structures along the new frontier.
A symbol of pride and prevention following the loss of Alsace-Lorraine in 1870, the Mont-Bart fort is one of the fortified works dotted along the new border. The jewel in the crown of a defensive system set up in 1873 by General Séré de Rivière, its 483-metre height once ensured a strategic advantage, and today offers an unobstructed view of the entire Montbéliard region. A defensive jewel with its caponiers, and an offensive monster thanks to its famous Mougin casemate (heavy artillery cannon), superbly preserved, the fort could house up to 720 soldiers in its underground barracks. As much a lookout point as a historical relic, Fort de Mont-Bart is the ideal place to add a little history to your Sunday strolls.
