ST. JOHN'S CATHEDRAL
Cathédrale Saint-Jean in Besançon, with capitals from the west apse combining Carolingian, Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Nestled between the citadel and the Black Gate, the architects had to deal with the lack of space and the remains of previous churches. Mixing Carolingian, Romanesque and Gothic styles, the church has been through centuries of history, during which destruction, reconstruction and remodeling have followed one another. You will admire the capitals of the western apse which date from the 12th century. At the entrance, don't miss the Renaissance tomb of Ferry Carondelet, abbot of Montbenoît, as well as the famous painting by Fra Bartolomeo near the sacristy.
