VICTOR HUGO'S BIRTHPLACE
Visit Victor Hugo's birthplace in Besançon, a place that showcases the struggles of the committed man he was.
Besançon has the privilege and the great honor of having seen Victor Hugo born on February 26, 1802. The writer was born there almost by chance and lived there for only six weeks before his father, a battalion commander, was transferred to Marseilles, but the capital of the Franc-Comté region is not without pride! The house where Victor Hugo was born has not been transformed into a museum or a place of remembrance, but it honours the struggles of this committed man: for freedom of expression, for human dignity, for the rights of the child and for the freedom of peoples. Some pieces of furniture from the Parisian apartment, offered by the Hugo family, decorate thefirst floor; the ground floor testifies to the attachment of the people of Bisont and the city to this man of letters who never returned to the city. However, he kept a strong link with his native town thanks to the Franc-Comtois he rubbed shoulders with, notably Charles Nodier (born in the house opposite). He was even elected an associate member of the Academy of Besançon. The exhibition includes Cosette's doll, the letter he wrote to the people of Besançon when the first commemorative plaque was placed on the house where he was born in 1880, and even books on Victor Hugo from all over the world (donated by the CLA's French teachers)... Younger children will be able to follow the Gavroche trail, allowing for an interactive and captivating visit for our little ones who are not yet immersed in reading Les Misérables.
