The flagship of French industry, Peugeot is one of the world's leading pioneers in the automotive industry. Over more than two centuries, Peugeot cycles and motorcycles have gained worldwide recognition in the competition and among the general public. Since 2014, the Metropolis scooter has been certified by Origine France Garantie.
History. The family business that preceded the current Peugeot company was founded in 1810. It originally produced table mills, then turned partly to automobiles and produced its first automobile in 1891, becoming one of the very first automobile companies in history. Following family disputes, Armand Peugeot founded the "Société des automobiles Peugeot" in 1896, which became a leading brand during the craze for the Roaring Twenties car.
Today, Peugeot belongs to the PSA Peugeot Citroën group, which also includes Citroën, acquired from Michelin in 1976. Peugeot mainly produces motor vehicles for private individuals and commercial vehicles as well as two-wheelers. The brand's historic factory in Le Lion is located in Mandeure (Doubs), a few kilometres from Sochaux. This site is home to Peugeot Motocycles.
In 2015, Mahindra of India took over the company at 51%, while the automobile manufacturer PSA held the remaining 49%. In July 2018, Mandeure's 373 employees learned of the loss of 90 jobs to come. A three-year €47 million recovery plan is also announced.
