NOTRE-DAME LA BLANCHE BASILICA
The Basilica of Our Lady of White is the place where a miracle occurred in 1608 on the night of Pentecost
The parish church of this small, picturesque Comtois town is a former abbey church. For over a thousand years (from 722 to 1791), Faverney was home to an abbey. First nuns, then Benedictine monks. They were expelled during the French Revolution. Notre-Dame church, a basilica since 1912, dates back to the 11th century. The nave and façade are Romanesque, while the choir is Gothic. It was here, in 1608, that a "miracle" occurred: on the night of Pentecost, a fire broke out in the church, destroying everything but sparing a monstrance housing hosts... It remained suspended above the ashes for an entire day and night! Numerous witnesses watched in amazement as the "prodigy" was recognized by the Pope in 1863. To this day, the site is a popular place of pilgrimage.
