MONT-VAUDOIS FORT
A fort forming the south-western pillar of Belfort's new fortified belt, designed to keep the Germans out.
The Mont-Vaudois fort, built from 1874 to 1877, forms the south-western pillar of the new fortified belt of Belfort desired by Séré de Rivières after the 1871 defeat against Prussia. Once past the impressive drawbridge, one enters a beautiful architectural structure made of ashlar capable of housing more than 650 men on approximately 5 hectares. Two bread ovens with a capacity of 250 rations as well as an ingenious system of cisterns and water filtration ensured a six-month autonomy. The five-way optical casemate has also been restored.
