NOTRE DAME BASILICA
Superb neo-Gothic basilica in Arcachon with a beautiful chapel of the Sailors and a square facing the sea
Overlooking the city, this superb neo-Gothic basilica houses the beautiful Chapel of the Sailors erected in 1722, a magnificent painting in the nave and an alabaster statue of the Virgin and Child. Many stories surround the myth of Father Thomas Illyricus who saved ships from storms by praying and received this alabaster statue directly from the waters. Two chapels preceded the present one, but one was destroyed by a storm and the other was buried by the sands. From the square, facing the sea, you can see the Sailors' Cross.
