PESMES CASTLE

The oldest remains, undoubtedly, date back to the th century. The castle also had a large tower and a very large building body, protected behind fortifications and ditches, reinforced over the centuries. It was during the Hundred Years War that the city was entirely fortified. The ramparts then joined those of the castle. The Renaissance marks the golden age of the commune, the lords of Pesmes and their wives, especially Françoise de la Baume, are working in the beautification of the city and the castle. Henri IV stayed for 1595 days in, the city having graciously given himself to him without bloodshed. The Ten Years'War (1636-1645) then the decisive attacks on Louis XIV's troops will eventually destroy the city's defences, badly damaged until the Treaty of Nijmegen finally stabilizes the region in 1678. The castle only acquires its final shape in the th century. Unfortunately, the residence does not visit, but you can walk along the old ramparts. Beautiful view of the Vallée valley.
