On the eve of the grape harvest, the giant bunch of grapes that is the Biou is the highlight of the Arbois patronal festival, which is held in the town.
This traditional festival dates back to the 17th century. It takes place on the first weekend of September on the occasion of the patronal festival honouring Saint-Just, the local patron saint. On Saturday, the winegrowers prepare a giant bunch of grapes which will be transported the next day through the town, to be hoisted in the choir of the church. After a few weeks, its weight equivalent will be transformed into wine offered to charities. There is the religious Biou and the Republican Biou. Other bious also take place in the surrounding villages.
