Saint-Seurin Basilica and archaeological site in Bordeaux, with rich vestiges of the Antiquity absolutely to discover
The porch and crypt date from the 11th century, the chevet and transept from the 12th century, and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Rose chapel from the 15th century, as do the episcopal pulpit, fine alabaster and sculpted stalls. Excavations have uncovered a vast Christian necropolis and traces of the construction of a religious building. A wealth of ancient remains, frescoed tombs, sarcophagi and amphorae are waiting to be discovered.

L'accès extérieur à la crypte archéologique était fermé, aussi me suis-je limité à l'intérieur de la basilique et à sa propre crypte. L'ensemble est très élégant et d'une grande beauté. L'intérêt majeur réside tout de même dans les sarcophages en marbre gris caractéristiques du sud-est pour la période de la fin de l'Antiquité et du haut Moyen Âge

Extérieurement l'ensemble de la Basilique Saint-Seurin est joli, dans son écrin de verdure. Malheureusement nous n'avons pas vu voir l'intérieur, car l'édifice était fermé suite à un récent incendie.

La basilique Saint-Seurin vaste édifice roman du XIe siècle où subsistent encore le porche, le chevet, la crypte et la base du clocher. Mais ce qui m'a le plus impressionné c'est la crypte et cet ensemble de sarcophages en pierre calcaire et marbre.
