AQUITAINE GATE
This door decorated with the royal arms and the arms of the city, located in Bordeaux, is a real triumphal arch.
A true triumphal arch, the Aquitaine gate, built on Place de la Victoire, is decorated on one side with the royal coat of arms and on the other with the city's coat of arms. It is built of Saint-Macaire stone and has an arcade more than 11 metres high and 5 metres wide. In 1753, the Aquitaine gate replaced the old Saint-Julien gate, which dated from 1302 and opened the passage to Spain, with two windows on each side allowing pedestrian control. The latter was named after the nearby hospital, created in 1231 to treat lepers and pestiferous people.
