It was once a populous suburb where small industries and crafts were concentrated: Cordiers, tressaient the hemp, cobblers, and the leather of bazadais, potters… At the end of the th century, large sugar refineries settled there. In 1755 Intendant Square built the major Mint Hotel at 4 Leon-Duguit Square. The Mint officers had elected their homes in beautiful th-century houses that can still be seen on the streets around the Mint Gate, Carpenteyre and St. Benoit. It is now a lively area of culture, with students from the ITU University of journalism, students of the Conservatory of Music, artists of the school of Fine Arts and actors of the TNBA, National Theatre of Bordeaux in Aquitaine.
