BORDEAUX ECO-CITIZEN HOUSE
The house includes exhibition spaces, conferences and educational workshops
As part of the renovation of the quays, the City of Bordeaux decided to retain the former premises used to employ dockworkers, with the idea of creating a space dedicated to raising ecological awareness. The 500 m² Maison - designed by Olivier Lehmans - includes exhibition spaces, conferences and educational workshops. It has been designed in line with the High Environmental Quality (HEQ) approach, and features environmentally-friendly devices and materials. The concrete roof of the former dockers' warehouse was demolished and replaced by a lighter, better insulated timber frame (spruce from the North of France, poplar from the Lot et Garonne and maritime pine from the Landes). This framework is covered by 270 m² of vegetated surface, providing natural thermal insulation while encouraging local biodiversity. In 2011, several beehives with 100,000 bees were installed, and we expect to produce over 50 kg of honey a year! In addition, around 150 m² of photovoltaic panels are designed to create clean energy, and solar thermal collectors contribute to the Maison's hot water supply. Maintenance of the roof, cleaning of the solar collectors and the supply of power to other elements of the Maison are carried out by means of an integrated rainwater recovery system. Exemplary!
