THREE-SEAT MONUMENT
Monument to three Resistance officers who defended Belfort with unshakeable firmness. A symbol of the town
Located between the Palais de Justice and the Préfecture, this monument pays tribute to the three officers who organized the city's resistance during the sieges of 1814 (113 days), 1815 (15 days) and 1870-71 (103 days). Like the Lion, it was designed by Bartholdi, who only had time to complete the model before his death. The three layers of red sandstone were taken from Vauban's former fortifications. The people of Belfort also refer to it as the monument of the three liars. But why? There's Legrand (but he's the smallest), Lecourbe (who stands up straight) and Denfert-Rochereau... whose statue is in bronze, like those at the top of the pedestal, which are allegorical representations of France and Alsace. Denfert-Rochereau's words are etched here for all eternity: to the enemy who summoned him to surrender, the colonel replied: "We are aware of our duties to France and to the Republic, and we are determined to fulfill them."

Il met à l'honneur, 3 chefs militaires: DENFERT-ROCHEREAU, LECOURBE et LEGRAND.
Situé sur la place de la République qui est aussi un parking, on ne peut que regretter que ce monument ne soit pas mis en valeur.
