Museum of history and Bartholdi space, located in Belfort, gathering a set of objects concerning the civil and military life
Created in 1972, this museum brings together a collection of objects relating to civilian and military life: insignia, decorations, uniforms of all the belligerents, newspapers... The tour begins with a presentation of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman remains, and continues with an evocation of the various conflicts up to the Second World War. The 19th century and its three sieges - which led to the separation of the Belfort district from the rest of Alsace - are particularly well-developed themes. The museum has also developed a space dedicated to the sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi, with several rooms covering 240m2 and a permanent exhibition of drawings, engravings and old photographs relating to the creator of the Lion of Belfort and the Statue of Liberty. Deeply affected by the 1870 war and the annexation of his native Alsace, Bartholdi used his work as an outlet for his affliction. An audioguide will take you on a tour of "Les Chemins de la liberté", a storytelling walk through the history of Belfort, with characters representing the full range of emotions. The Grand Souterrain remains the setting for a large-scale projected scenography where history and modernity come together for a panoramic sound and light show.
