This fort, built between 1874 and 1877, is an example of the "cavalry" style: heavy artillery works in the open air, while close defense and infantry watch from the low rampart overlooking the moat. What makes it special? Counter-scarp coffers replace traditional caponiers, a rare innovation before 1885. Designed to accommodate 180 men and around 20 cannons, it was never modernized... A sentinel frozen in time.
