CHERRY WORK
Erected to reinforce the defense between the Vézelois and Fougerais forts. French fortification of the 14-18 war
The Meroux intermediate structure, built between 1908 and 1913 to reinforce the defense between the Vézelois and Fougerais forts, embodies the apogee of French fortification before the outbreak of the First World War. The simple concrete structure forms a trapezoid with a ditch defended by two counter-scarp walls. Connected by tunnels, it housed over 400 men and featured two machine-gun turrets and one 75mm turret, with a parapet for the infantry. The structure is freely accessible from the outside.
