ABBEY-CHURCH OF OUR LADY
Abbatiale, a fine example of Romanesque art in Normandy and the jewel of Bernay, housing the town hall, a municipal museum and the courthouse.
It’s one of Bernay’s greatest treasures. Built in the 11th century, the abbey’s architecture is typical of the pioneering Romanesque style in Normandy. Not to be missed is the beautiful series of capitals sculpted with plant motifs, figures and monsters. The monument was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. Since the French Revolution, it has ceased to be a monastery. Today, the monastery buildings house the town hall, the municipal museum and the courthouse. The apse and chapter house are part of the museum tour.
