DONJON
This flint-built edifice, surrounded by deep ditches, gives a noble impression thanks to its mortar coatings.
Dominating the town of Conches-en-Ouche, the ruins of the medieval castle evoke a fascinating defensive past. Built in the late 11th century by Roger III de Tosny, the site included a keep and five towers, surrounded by 2.60-metre-thick ramparts. Constructed of flint, the castle's noble appearance was enhanced by a mortar coating mixed with lime and sand, visible on the walls and windows. On the first floor, a food reserve was essential during the many sieges and testifies to the strategic importance of the fortress.
