DONJON
This flint-built edifice, surrounded by deep ditches, gives a noble impression thanks to its mortar coatings.
Overlooking the town of Conches-en-Ouche, the ruins of the keep are a reminder of the site’s defensive past. Built at the end of the 11th century by Roger III de Tosny, the castle, comprising a keep and five towers, was surrounded by 2.60-metre-thick walls. Built of flint and surrounded by deep moats, the building gives a noble impression thanks to its mortar coatings, mixed with lime and sand, visible on the walls and window embrasures. The first floor housed a food store, which came in handy during the many sieges.
