SAINT-MÉDARD CHURCH
A historical monument since 1926, the church of Illeville was partially built with the facing stones of the medieval castle of Montfort. King Philip Augustus (1165-1223) ordered its construction, according to a Latin cross plan with a projecting transept. It was ceded to the Carthusian monks of Rouen around 1520, as well as a seigneurial house owned by Louis XII in Illeville, of which unfortunately there is no trace. Recognizable for its proud bell tower with a square stone base and a pavilion spire, the church was originally dedicated to Saint-Philibert and Saint-Blaise. In 1809, it came under the patronage of Saint-Médard, who, according to tradition, continued to be honoured on the Sunday following his feast day, June 8. In front of the western facade, do not miss the 16th century stone porch, half Gothic and half Renaissance in style.
The road linking Rouen to Mont-Saint-Michel passes through Illeville-sur-Montfort. A beaconing nail bearing the effigy of Mont-Saint-Michel is installed on the side of Saint-Médard church.
