PORTAL OF THE OLD ABBEY

Remarkable portal in Ivry, the first expression of the Gothic style in Normandy, the only vestige of the 12th century Notre-Dame abbey.
First expression of the Gothic style in Normandy, this portal, unfortunately very mutilated during the Revolution, is the only apparent vestige of the 12th-century Notre-Dame Abbey. It was undoubtedly sculpted by the Royal Portal Team of Chartres Cathedral. On the still legible keystones, we find the theme of the Apocalypse, as well as column statues, only one of which is still in place. We know that the tympanum (destroyed) showed a Christ in Majesty, surrounded by the four Evangelists. Some traces of polychromy are still visible.
